The Hague – The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is pleased to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic, established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. This agreement represents a further step in the tireless pursuit of truth and justice, with the aim of uncovering the fate and whereabouts of tens of thousands of missing persons across Syria.
Through this partnership, SNHR will contribute its 14 years of experience documenting violations, its extensive databases, and its in-depth knowledge of the Syrian context to enhance the effectiveness of international investigative mechanisms in obtaining accurate information about missing persons and assisting in identifying victims in mass graves. SNHR also hopes that this cooperation will contribute to locating and protecting these graves, identifying human remains, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect, and handing them over to their families for proper burial, whenever possible.
SNHR believes this partnership will strengthen victim-centered advocacy efforts, support transitional justice processes, truth-telling initiatives, and restore dignity to countless families still experiencing the pain of loss and uncertainty.
SNHR renews its commitment to close cooperation with local and international institutions dedicated to truth, justice, and accountability, affirming its unwavering support for the rights of victims and survivors in their courageous struggle for a Syria based on justice, human rights, and the rule of law.
