Cyberattacks on Our Website are an Almost Daily Occurrence, yet the Latest Attack Was Exceptionally Ferocious

On the afternoon on Thursday, April 18, 2024, the Syrian Network for Human Rights’ (SNHR) website was subjected to a relentless, hours-long barrage of vicious cyberattacks aimed at denying its services, which were part of a broader attempt to put it completely out of service. Such cyberattacks are by no means a new experience for SNHR, with our website attacked on a daily basis. When these attacks are exceptionally ferocious, to the extent of causing a slowdown or technical issues, we report such attacks. In a handful of extreme cases when we are unable to repel those attacks, our website may cease operations altogether for hours or days.

DDoS, or Distributed Denial of Service, attacks focus on exhausting a website’s online resources, such as its cyber infrastructure, with the aim of forcing it offline. DDoS attacks are carried out by sending a massive number of requests to the provider in order to exhaust its request-processing capabilities, thereby rendering it not properly functional for a certain period of time.
