The Hague – Syrian Network for Human Rights:
A group of 162 Syrian and international organizations, including the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), has sent a joint letter to the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, as well as to the US Departments of Treasury, State, Justice, Commerce, and Defense, calling for the easing of sanctions on Syria.
The letter was also sent to the chairs and ranking members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC), the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC), the Senate Banking Committee (SBC), and the House Financial Services Committee, as well as to members of Congress.
The letter highlights the fact that the Syrian people have endured years of unimaginable suffering, including chemical weapons attacks, systematic torture, enforced disappearance, mass displacement, the systematic targeting of civilians, and the destruction of infrastructure and civilian property.
The letter also emphasizes that Syria urgently needs economic recovery, which requires the easing and lifting of sanctions. It further notes that Bashar Assad left behind a collapsed economy, destroyed infrastructure, an impoverished population, shattered government institutions, one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, and a legacy of multiple sanctions imposed on Syria.
The letter also includes several recommendations for urgent measures that the signatories appealed to the U.S. government to implement.
