The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) strongly condemns the death of Syrian citizen Alaa Adnan al-Amin due to torture at the hands of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who arrested him in the city of Qamishli in the Hasaka countryside. He had been detained for several months in one of their detention centers without being formally charged or having his family informed of his whereabouts. Information obtained by the Network indicates that the victim was subjected to torture during his detention, which led to his death before his body was handed over to his family on March 8, 2026.
According to documentation by SNHR, Alaa was arrested on Monday, October 20, 2025, by members of SDF after a raid on his family’s home in Qamishli. No legal arrest warrant was presented, and neither he nor his family were informed of the reasons for his detention or the charges against him. Since his arrest, his family has been unable to ascertain his whereabouts, despite contacting several SDF offices in Hasaka Governorate.
On Sunday, March 8, 2026, Alaa’s family received a phone call informing them that they could collect his body from Al-Hasaka Hospital. The family reported that the body bore clear signs of torture, including a puncture wound and fracture to the skull, a broken ribcage, and bruises on the chest and legs, in addition to signs of decomposition and swelling. The family also confirmed that Alaa had been in good health before his arrest. According to the family, the forensic doctor estimated his death to have occurred in January 2026.
It is worth mentioning that Alaa Adnan Al-Amin is from the city of Qamishli and holds Swedish citizenship. He had returned to the city on September 7, 2025, with the aim of getting married and settling there.
